Okay, not completely, but there is a great article out about "crowdsourcing" scientific problems to people who like to play games and solve puzzles, and they accomplished in 3 weeks what some scientists haven't been able to do in years.
What is "crowdsourcing"? It's the concept of opening up a problem to the world, and letting them solve it. Wikipedia is a big example of it, as are most free and open-sources softwares. While there is the possibility for negative influences, in general crowdsourcing has seen amazing products and answers developed quickly.
